The technique has long been practised in Thailand, particularly in the Northeast as well as some central provinces such as Chai Nat, Uthai Thani, Suphan Buri, Kanchanaburi and Lop Buri. It is also made in the Northern provinces of Chiang Mai and Nan. To create a design, cotton or silk yarns are made into bundles with a number of yarns appropriate for the design. They are stretched on a frame called hong mi and are tied at specific positions to block the dye, a procedure known as ob in Thai. In the past, strings made from banana trunk were used for tying, but now plastic ropes are preferred. Tying must be done tightly and carefully. Positions that are tied will not absorb the dye. Tying and dyeing can be done as many times as required by the design. Weaving must be done carefully, following the order of the reels. Weavers must also draw on their experience to adjust dyed yarns to create to a perfect design. Mat mi weaving is therefore a traditional craft that requires advanced skills.

This one-of-a-kind garment is reversible and unique from each side.

This striking kimono style jacket is another gem in our Indigo range. Dutch colonial tastes also influenced textile imagery, and Dutch missionaries and colonists began collecting east Sumbanese textiles at the beginning of the 20th century. The ikat technique produces individualized designs with slightly blurred edges; these variations provide dynamism within the repeated patterns. Ikat (pronounced ‘ee-KAHT’) is derived from the Malaysian word ‘mengikat’, which means ‘to tie/bind’, and is not used by Thais to describe the fabric. Mudmee is produced through the traditional method of tying in the desired pattern with straw, hay or banana ropes. The ropes stop water from affecting the silk or cotton yarns, whilst dyeing it in the process. The tied yarns move through the dyeing process, but only the untied yarns absorb the dye. The method is repeated as many times as necessary, depending on the preferred colour variations. Afterwards, each silk or cotton yarn is woven to create a variety of designs, combining the coloured areas to produce patterns. The mudmee motifs are based on the varieties of patterns and lines. The complexity of creating these textiles means that hinggi production is limited. The chemical compound indican contained in the raw leaves is converted into indigo by fermenting the leaves. The traditional process uses only natural materials and no chemicals of any kind. When the fermented indigo solution is ready the cloth is repeatedly soaked in the vat. After squeezing the excess liquid from the textile it is spread wide and hung on a rope. This allows the textile to oxidize and thus fix the color. Just after the textile is removed from the vat it looks dark green. As it oxidizes it turns blue. The soaking and oxidizing steps are repeated over and over until the final desired color has been produced. For the darkest blues soaking lasts 30 minutes and is repeated 30 to 40 times.

This one of a kind garment is reversible and unique from each side.

Relaxed fit long kimono style belted coat Matsu jacket is crafted from heavy black khadi silk and vintage traditional mat-mi from Thailand running through the spine of the coat and vintage red silk ikat with tussar silk golden lapels on the other side.

Khadi Silk Weaving Craft : Khadi silk can be spun either out of pure silks or be blended with other yarns. The word “ikat” derives from the Malay-Indonesian term mengikat, meaning “to tie” or “to bind.” Before weaving begins, sections of the threads are tightly bound and resist-dyed in carefully planned sequences to create patterns that emerge only once the textile is woven on the loom. The characteristic softly blurred edges of ikat motifs are not imperfections, but the result of this highly skilled and labor-intensive process.

Keynote from Kārātoyaa:
• Please note that, due to the antique nature of many fabrics, pieces may carry subtle signs of previous use — something we believe adds meaning and character to the garment.
• Some naturally dyed textiles, even after generations, may occasionally release traces of color.
• All Kārātoyaa garments should be cared for through professional dry cleaning only.

This extraordinary piece is a part of KARATOYAA indigo range. Dutch colonial tastes also influenced textile imagery, and Dutch missionaries and colonists began collecting east Sumbanese textiles at the beginning of the 20th century. The commercialization and export trading of Sumbanese textiles began in the 1920s, which also coincided with the erosion of the aristocracy’s power, resulting in the relaxation of sumptuary laws. There are three motif variations: weft mudmee, warp mudmee and double mudmee.

Traditionally in Thailand the nobility wore mudmee on a daily basis, whilst others wore it during festive occasions or ceremonies. There are three motif variations: weft mudmee, warp mudmee and double mudmee.

Traditionally in Thailand the nobility wore mudmee on a daily basis, whilst others wore it during festive occasions or ceremonies.
