SAMURA.004

Oversized SAMURA nomad bag is a perfect companion on your inter-dimensional and other kind of journeys. This bag features Swat valley embroidery from middle 1900´s on canvas base.

Swat Valley embroidery, particularly in the form of cushions and related dowry textiles, consistently incorporates stylised floral and rosette motifs arranged within geometric frameworks and is intrinsically linked to marriage and trousseau culture.  As described by Muhammad Sher Ali Khan, Swati embroidery was produced primarily for domestic and social life—“for pleasure” and for the eyes of women and their families—yet it also played a visible role in wedding exchange, status display, and the presentation of dowry goods.

Swati work of the early twentieth century is notable for fine, dense, highly controlled stitching in silk, often in counted-thread technique, producing strongly geometric designs on crimson or shocking-red grounds. Khan records that patterns were handed down through generations as a family “treasury of patterns,” and that the technical quality of older pieces can be exceptionally high, reflecting the craft at its peak.

Two principal local approaches are described: Astari Gandel (back-side, counted-thread embroidery using cross/running/darning-related stitches) and Makhi Gandel (front-side embroidery with satin and long-and-short stitches). The textile used for this bag preserves that legacy in contemporary form, carrying forward a rare surviving fragment of Swat Valley domestic heritage.
