MATSU.011

This one of a kind garment is reversible and unique from each side.

Relaxed fit long kimono style belted coat Matsu is crafted from vintage Higgi Ikat from West Sumba in orange hues, other side features vintage block printed Tussar silk.

Hinggi Ikat is a unique type of textile, originating from Sumba Island, Indonesia. Hinggi is a rectangular hand woven cloths, that were traditionally worn as male-exclusive formal attire at wedding and burial ceremonies and at other feasts, festivals and ceremonial events.   distinguished not by the weaving technique, but by the tie-dyeing method used to colour bundles of threads for the warp, weft, or both. Most hinggi are warp ikat. Once the threads are dyed, they must be meticulously arranged to ensure that the woven patterns align correctly. This process demands exceptional planning and precision in both dyeing and weaving, traditionally performed exclusively by women. The complexity of creating these textiles means that hinggi production is limited. Additionally, dyeing is constrained to a single period each year due to the indigo plant's growth cycle, and weaving can only take place during the dry season. As a result, it can take several years for a weaver to complete just one hinggi.

Tussar Silk : It is a luxurious fabric woven from the silk produced by silkworms that feed on oak and juniper leaves. What sets it apart is its natural golden sheen and textured surface, making it a unique and prized silk variety. This distinctive texture is a result of the silkworms' irregular spinning patterns and their preference for feeding on a variety of leaves. As a result, Tussar Silk boasts an organic, slightly nubby surface that adds character and depth to the fabric, making each piece one-of-a-kind. This charming uneven texture enhances the tactile and visual appeal of Tussar Silk. Tussar silk is often known for its durability and is used to create exquisite textiles, prized for its rich, earthy tones and lustrous appearance.

Hand Block Printing: It is an ancient Indian textile art form where skilled artisans carve intricate designs onto wooden blocks. These blocks are then dipped in dyes and meticulously stamped onto fabric, creating beautiful and repetitive patterns. It's a labor-intensive process that results in unique, handcrafted textiles, each telling its own story.
