KAJ.049

This one-of-a-kind garment is reversible and unique from each side.

This striking kimono style jacket is created from vintage handwoven Aguayo textile from Bolivia on one side and hand spun Tussar silk featuring Dabu resist printing from Rajasthan.

Dabu resist printing is a traditional hand-block printing technique from Rajasthan, India, known for its intricate patterns and earthy aesthetics. The process involves applying a resist paste made from clay, lime, and natural gum onto the fabric using wooden blocks, which prevents the dye from penetrating certain areas. Once the resist is applied, the fabric is dyed, and after drying, the resist is washed away to reveal beautifully patterned motifs. This process can be repeated multiple times with different colours to create complex, multi-layered designs. Dabu printing is widely used in creating ethnic textiles such as sarees, dupattas, and home furnishings, featuring motifs inspired by nature and geometric patterns.

Aguayo is a traditional textile from Bolivia and other Andean regions, woven by indigenous communities, particularly the Aymara and Quechua peoples. It is characterized by its vibrant, multi-coloured stripes and intricate geometric patterns, often symbolizing elements of nature, culture, and spirituality. Aguayo textiles are typically made from wool (alpaca or sheep) and woven using traditional backstrap or floor looms, ensuring durability and warmth suited for the high-altitude Andean climate. These textiles serve various purposes, including carrying babies and goods, as shawls, and for ceremonial or decorative uses. The bold colours and symmetrical designs of Aguayo fabric reflect the rich cultural heritage and identity of Andean communities.
