KAJ.053

This one-of-a-kind garment is reversible and unique from each side.

KAJ is  kimono style jacket created from vintage tribal Puandum textile from Myanmar on one side and vintage  handloom Dabu Printed purple Tussar silk from other side.

Puandum is a traditional handwoven textile used by the Mizo, Zomi, Kuki, and Chin communities of Myanmar, Northeast India and Bangladesh The dominant black background signifies dignity and strength, while red symbolizes courage, white represents purity, and green stands for prosperity and nature. Geometric lines, zigzags, and diamond patterns reflect ancestral journeys, balance, and tribal unity, while mountain-like motifs represent the homeland and stability. Some weaves also include hornbills, tigers, or stags, symbolizing bravery and wisdom. The combination of horizontal and vertical bands reflects community bonds and ancestral lineage, making Puandum a textile rich in tradition and meaning.

Traditionally, it was worn by warriors, chiefs, and honored individuals and passed down as a family heirloom. Handwoven on loin looms, its colors represent courage (red), purity (white), and prosperity (green). Today, Puandum is still used in cultural festivals, ceremonies, and efforts to preserve indigenous weaving traditions.

Dabu printing is a traditional mud-resist hand-block printing technique from Rajasthan, India, dating back to ancient times and flourishing during the Mughal era. The process involves applying a resist paste made of mud, lime, and gum onto fabric using wooden blocks, followed by dyeing, which leaves behind intricate patterns after washing. Natural dyes like indigo, pomegranate, and turmeric are commonly used, giving Dabu prints their distinctive earthy and vibrant tones. The craft is labor-intensive, requiring multiple stages of printing, drying, and dyeing, making each piece unique. Today, Dabu printing remains popular in Bagru and Akola villages of Rajasthan, blending tradition with modern fashion trends.
