MATSU.017

This one of a kind garment is reversible and unique from each side.

Relaxed fit long kimono style belted coat Matsu is crafted from vintage handloom, naturally dyed hand painted cotton from Bagru with traditional Mayan textile from Guatemala on one side and vintage Warli art wool on the other side.

Quetzal Guatemalan handloom fabric here comes from Highlands of Guatemala. Local weavers still use the original Mayan loom, also known as a backstrap loom, that consists of rods, rope, and a strap that is worn around the weaver’s waist. Weaving is done mostly by women, A weaver straps a leather belt around her back that attaches to a small wooden loom.  She ties the other end of the loom, which can be several feet away depending on the length of the textile, to a tree or other tall object in the vicinity. Backstrap woven textile are quite narrow —because there is a limit to the width a weaver can reach while holding onto the loom.

Traditional motives for Guatemalan textiles are usually nature – like plants and animals and astrology related motives. Interpretation of the design and the colour will depend on the area, where specific fabric was woven, however common colour coding shall read as :

Blue: The sky and water

Red: Sunrise, daytime, and energy and power

Yellow: The sun and corn

Black: Sunset, nighttime, death, recovery, and war.

White: Air, spirituality, and hope

Green: Plant life, royalty and represents the Quetzal (national bird of Guatemala)

Warli Art:
This indigenous art form is deeply rooted in the culture and traditions of the Warli community located in Maharashtra, India ~ With its origins believed to be connected to their rituals and celebrations. What sets Warli Art apart is, its simplicity and symbolism. Traditionally created by the women of the tribe, this art form consists of intricate geometric patterns and motifs depicting scenes from everyday rural life, nature, and folklore. Using only white pigment made from rice paste and bamboo sticks as brushes, Warli artists adorn mud walls, floors, and even cloth with their timeless designs.
