KAJ.048
This one-of-a-kind garment is reversible and unique from each side.
Beautiful string knot kimono-style jacket crafted out of handwoven ikat textile from Sumba, Indonesia; the other side is a vintage mid-century screen printed cotton-silk jacquard from West Bengal, India.
The textile from Sumba is a traditional hinggi, woven using a sacred ikat technique in which motifs are resist-dyed into the threads before they are placed on the loom. The figures—often dragons, horses, or mythical creatures—symbolize protection, ancestral strength, and cosmic guardianship. These cloths are worn in ceremonies and represent deep ties to lineage, ritual, and the marapu (spirit world).
The jacquard from West Bengal features fine cotton-silk weaving combined with expressive prints in muted tones. Popular in the mid-20th century, these sarees reflect a period where tradition met modernist influence—fluid designs printed over geometric woven bases, used both for daily elegance and quiet statements of artistry.
• Please note, that due to antique nature of the fabrics there may be signs of past experiences – we believe it adds value and meaning to the garments.
• Some naturally dyed fabrics, even after lasting generations, may still release colour.
• Please keep in mind that all Karatoyaa pieces are Dry Clean only with a professional service provider.
